{"id":1249,"date":"2011-04-05T06:35:11","date_gmt":"2011-04-04T20:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philippinesentinel.org\/?p=1249"},"modified":"2011-04-05T06:35:11","modified_gmt":"2011-04-04T20:35:11","slug":"dalai-lama-religion-is-not-important","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philippinesentinel.org\/?p=1249","title":{"rendered":"Dalai Lama: \u201cReligion is not important.\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The following is a brief dialogue between Brazilian Theologian Leonardo Boff and the Dalai Lama: <\/p>\n<p>Leonardo is one of the renovators of the Theology of Freedom. The following conversation took place in a round table discussion about religion and freedom in which the Dalai Lama was the main guest.<\/p>\n<p>Leonardo maliciously, but also with interest, asked the Dalai Lama: \u201cYour holiness, what is the best religion?\u201d Leonardo thought he would say:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Tibetan Buddhism\u201d or \u201cThe oriental religions, which are much older than Christianity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dalai Lama paused, smiled and looked him in the eyes. It surprised Leonardo because he knew of the malice contained in his question.<\/p>\n<p>The Dalai Lama answered: \u201cThe best religion is the one that gets you closest to God. It is the one that makes you a better person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To get out of his embarrassment with such a wise answer, Leonardo asked: \u201cWhat is it that makes me better?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dalai Lama responded: \u201cWhatever makes you more Compassionate, more Sensible, more Detached, more Loving, more Humanitarian, more Responsible, more Ethical.\u201d \u201cThe religion that will do that for you is the best religion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonardo was silent for a moment, marvelling and even today thinking of his wise and irrefutable response: \u201cI am not interested, my friend, about your religion or if you are religious or not. \u201cWhat really is important to me is your behaviour in front of your peers, family, work, community, and in front of the world. \u201cRemember, the universe is the echo of our actions and our thoughts. \u201cThe law of action and reaction is not exclusively for physics. It is also of human relations. If I act with goodness, I will receive goodness. If I act with eviI, I will get evil. \u201cWhat our grandparents told us is the pure truth. You will always have what you desire for others. Being happy is not a matter of destiny. It is a matter of options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally he said:<\/p>\n<p>   \u201cTake care of your Thoughts because they become Words.<br \/>\n     Take care of your Words because they will become Actions.<br \/>\n     Take care of your Actions because they will become Habits.<br \/>\n     Take care of your Habits because they will form your Character.<br \/>\n     Take care of your Character because it will form your Destiny,<br \/>\n     and your Destiny will be your Life<br \/>\n     \u2026 and \u2026 \u201cThere is no religion higher than the Truth.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following is a brief dialogue between Brazilian Theologian Leonardo Boff and the Dalai Lama: Leonardo is one of the renovators of the Theology of Freedom.
