Homes have dusted off decors inviting Christmas cheers to their doors. People have started preparing for their booked holidays, their Christmas parties, meals, games and/or gifts.

Gifts have been a big part of this annual event not just because we want to give but also because they are mostly expected. Most of us also feel the pressure and get embarrassed when we have nothing to give. And I know sometimes when you give, you open yourself to criticism, as the present becomes the basis of your status or taste.

But is this really what Christmas is all about?

The global crisis has extended beyond the correction period and it seems the domino effect has lingered a bit longer than its historical duration. A lot of families have been affected and life is not as easy as it used to be. Although there’s an abundance of SALE signs, “gifting” to some would be a much heftier responsibility this time around.

You must have heard “as long as the gift is from the heart,” “it’s the thought that counts” or “Christmas will go on with or without the gifts.” Although all of them are true, these phrases are mere justification on a feeling of inadequacy. Worse, a lot of people sacrifice beyond their means that they end up giving what others want but they will spend the next few months “paying” for it. But why should one feel bad? Why give in the first place?

Christmas is about God. God is about love. Love is about giving. The spirit of Christmas is not about the GIFT. It is actually the act of GIVING. “For God so loved the world that He gave us His only begotten Son.” He loves us so much he gave us what matters most to Him. What matters to you? What matters to your family and friends?

Your gift may not be the expensive Gucci bag your friend wants but being able to lend a helping hand, your ears to listen or your shoulder for them to cry on is far better option– the gift of friendship is priceless.

Your gift may not be the ½ carat diamond ring your wife has her eyes on. It may not be the latest game your child has been waiting for. But being able to provide the attention they deserve, nourish the environment they need and/or spend time and grow with them is much more precious than getting something with which you can swipe your credit card. Kids need their parents’ presence, not their presents.

Christmas should be a cheerful, not a stressful season. Each year should be about making memories and not establishing reputation. The best gift you can give is being a great example to your kids, an understanding support for your partner, a trust-worthy friend, a reliable team player at work and forgiveness to our enemies. That is showing patience, kindness, humility and respect; all of which are aspects of love. And what better gift would there be other than love?

Wishing you a Christmas of blessings & peace and a promising New Year!

The last twelve months, it seems, boarded the fast train bringing around Christmas Spirit once again.
