{"id":2317,"date":"2012-12-07T12:38:21","date_gmt":"2012-12-07T12:38:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philippinesentinel.org\/?p=2317"},"modified":"2012-12-07T12:38:21","modified_gmt":"2012-12-07T12:38:21","slug":"much-needed-emergency-aid-on-its-way-to-the-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philippinesentinel.org\/?p=2317","title":{"rendered":"Much-needed emergency aid on its way to the Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chifley Federal Member of Parliament <strong>Ed Husic<\/strong> has welcomed today\u2019s announcement that the Australian Government will provide $5 million in emergency relief for families trapped or left homeless by Typhoon Pablo (International code name Bopha) in the Philippines. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>His comments follow today\u2019s announcement by Foreign Minister Bob Carr that Australia will provide the funds for survival kits and 1,000 tonnes of emergency food aid.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Husic said the typhoon had created a humanitarian crisis and is happy that Australia is in a position to answer the call for help from the Philippine Government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the Red Cross and international relief agencies, Australia\u2019s contribution of basic equipment and food will be distributed in Mindanao,\u201d Mr Husic said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that Australians who have families in the Philippines will be thankful for this assistance and will themselves be exploring ways [how] they can contribute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Bopha first made landfall in Mindanao at 4.45am, Tuesday December 4 with torrential rains and winds exceeding 250 kilometres an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Australia is the WFP\u2019s fifth largest national donor.
