{"id":2485,"date":"2013-03-07T16:14:25","date_gmt":"2013-03-07T16:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philippinesentinel.org\/?p=2485"},"modified":"2013-03-07T16:14:25","modified_gmt":"2013-03-07T16:14:25","slug":"beware-of-phone-scam-promising-refunds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philippinesentinel.org\/?p=2485","title":{"rendered":"Beware of phone scam promising refunds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">4 Feruary 2013.<\/span><\/strong> Federal Member for Chifley <strong>Ed Husic<\/strong> today warned the community of a new phone scam using the lure of government refunds to try to steal money.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m astounded at how sophisticated this scam is,\u201d Mr Husic said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had three residents in the last few days contact my office and they have all expressed surprise at how much personal information these scammers already have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose targeted have all been told the caller is from the Australian Government and provided with a name, reference number and Sydney phone number to call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the Sydney phone number, this is most likely an off-shore scam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scam asks victims to transfer a sum of money via Western Union in order to receive a substantially greater refund.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Australian Government does not conduct its business via Western Union and that should always ring alarm bells.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This warning is a timely reminder about protecting your personal information as it is very valuable to those looking to commit fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone contacted by this or similar scams are encouraged to contact the Australian Government\u2019s SCAMwatch infocentre on 1300 795 995.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>4 Feruary 2013.
