April 23, 2009<\/span><\/u><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\">. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\">Under the able leadership of PHCAA Managing Director <strong>Ella Magallanes Martirez,<\/strong> several members of The Philippine Health Care Association of Australia ventured into the little-known <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">island<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Caluya<\/st1:placename>, a 4<sup>th<\/sup> class municipality in the <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">province<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Antique<\/st1:placename>, <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Philippines<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. Their mission was to deliver medical consultations, medical supplies, dental extractions, minor surgical operations, and other health care services. Everything was provided free to the isolated <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">island<\/st1:placetype>  of <st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Caluya<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> that had a very small population of only 20,049,<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 3pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\">There is no hospital in the island which has only 1 doctor, 2 nurses and 4 midwives servicing the needs of the residents. PHCAA Project Coordinator <strong>Nelma Galas<\/strong> said that it was a very tiring experience. But Nelma added: \u201cthe PHCAA team derived satisfaction in seeing the happy faces of people who benefited from the services and medical supplies provided.\u201d <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 3pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\">During the 3-day medical mission, the team of 14 volunteers provided a total of 1,294 medical consultations, 361 dental extractions, 151 minor surgical operations (mostly excisions), and 52 PAPs Smear. On the last day, they conducted a health education seminar to 30 residents.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 3pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 3pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\">The health education seminar which was attended mostly by Barangay Health Workers covered First Aid, Basic Life Support, and Obstetric Emergency Procedures.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 3pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 3pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\">Medical and surgical supplies used during the medical mission amounted to over AUD 4,000. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 3pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial Narrow'\">This early, PHCAA is already planning a second medical mission next year to <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Caluya<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">Island<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> to include Ophthalmological and major surgical services.
