If there’s one person among our ranks who is deeply\u00a0hurt by the sad incident \u2014 it is I. For four years (1981-85),\u00a0\u00a0I was a university\u00a0recipient of the Ateneo Scholarship Fund (ASF)\u00a0which is\u00a0granted to\u00a0students who, because of their family’s financial position\u00a0have little, or nil,\u00a0 chance of studying at the elitist and expensive Ateneo de Manila.<\/p>\n
After completing\u00a0university studies, I became an active organiser\u00a0of fundraising activities during our first batch\u00a0reunion which happened after 10 years. We were able to raise P150,000, a record at that time\u00a0for ASF.<\/p>\n
As a further sense of gratitude,\u00a0I became\u00a0actively\u00a0\u00a0involved in quite a few\u00a0of its activities, and until late\u00a0last year, had given regular contributions, albeit a small amount,\u00a0to ASF.\u00a0(I stopped contributing when the Napoles\u00a0list issue came out, \u00a0but that’s another story).<\/p>\n
I have always been proud of my Jesuit education, and prouder \u00a0of\u00a0\u00a0the Jesuit spirituality. But to say the least, I am\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0really disappointed and disgusted that the President of Ateneo had to compromise its\u00a0values with\u00a0someone who played a major role in prostituting and robbing the Philippines, and\u00a0 who\u00a0even after\u00a0so many years, has not even shown, or attempted to show any remorse.<\/p>\n
Mrs Marcos instead lives in a hallucinatory world that she was a \u00a0saviour of the Filipino\u00a0 people. That for me\u00a0was hard to accept. I am wondering why the Ateneo leadership did not see the incident from that light \u2014 and it was\u00a0just too late to apologise.<\/p>\n
In the end, I guess it has something to do with money.
