Up to 300 jobs are in doubt after Energy Australia announced plans to close its call centre in Melbourne’s north-east.<\/p>\n
Staff at the centre in Mill Park have been told their jobs will be relocated to a new call centre in the Philippines from September next year.<\/p>\n
Some positions will be moved to the company’s other sites in Victoria.<\/p>\n
The Hong Kong-owned electricity generator and retailer said the move was tough, but necessary given the challenging times for the energy sector.<\/p>\n
An Energy Australia spokesperson said the change would provide flexibility to scale operations up or down to match customer demand.<\/p>\n
“With a smaller real estate footprint in Melbourne, the move will save money which will enable us to provide a more competitive service to our customers,” the company spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
The company said it was giving employees plenty of time to decide whether to stay with the company or leave.<\/p>\n
