{"id":4568,"date":"2016-08-06T19:14:45","date_gmt":"2016-08-06T19:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philippinesentinel.org\/?p=4568"},"modified":"2016-08-06T19:14:45","modified_gmt":"2016-08-06T19:14:45","slug":"tension-in-scs-will-escalate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philippinesentinel.org\/?p=4568","title":{"rendered":"Tension in SCS will escalate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tensions are likely to escalate in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/beijing-remains-angry-defiant-and-defensive-as-key-south-china-sea-tribunal-ruling-looms\/2016\/07\/12\/11100f48-4771-11e6-8dac-0c6e4accc5b1_story.html?hpid=hp_rhp-top-table-main_southchina-1240am%3Ahomepage%2Fstory\" target=\"_blank\">the Permanent Court of Arbitration\u2019s ruling <\/a>that invalidated China\u2019s claims and bolstered those of the Philippines.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>China has rejected the PCA&#8217;s decision; its state-controlled media outlets called the court a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2016-06\/29\/c_135476350.htm\" target=\"_blank\">law-abusing tribunal<\/a>.\u201d One Chinese official even speculated that &#8220;money was involved&#8221; in the decision making. He seemed to imply that the Philippines bribed the PCA judges.<\/p>\n<p>The United States, for its part, is determined to enforce the ruling and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/story\/military\/2016\/07\/06\/us-navy-destroyers-stalk-chinas-claims-south-china-sea\/86777268\/\" target=\"_blank\">has stepped up naval patrols<\/a> in the region in anticipation of China\u2019s negative reaction. This is a dangerous game. China is more prepared for a confrontation than Western experts may expect. We are, quite literally, in perilous waters.
