Spotlight on a true blue journalist

He is indeed a true blue journalist, having graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University in 1956 and having obtained a Master’s Degree in Journalism from Northwestern University in Chicago. But his being a true blue journalist does not end there.

For many years now, Mr. Jaime Kelly Pimentel has been the sports editor of a popular newspaper in Sydney. Now in his mid-70s, he has refused to retire and is still very active in the service of the community.

He is the convenor of a Filipino press club in Sydney which he affectionately calls ‘filpressyd.’ He is very low key and has continuously declined to accept the title of president or chairman, which according to him is not essential. What is more important, he says, is that the group is able to exchange ideas, share current news stories during its monthly breakfast meetings called ‘kapihan’ (coffee break) and maintain camaraderie.

During the past several months, Jimmy has encouraged the formation of several Filipino radio stations. Among many that are now on air are Radio Bandila, Radio Kawayan, Radio Mabuhay, Radio Dalisay, and Radio Sandigan.

Mr. Pimentel continues to educate members and non-members of filpressyd via workshops and seminars for which he does not charge any fee. He encourages participation of radio broadcasters, publishers, editors, columnists and even aspiring freelance writers to these workshops to further develop their skills in the field of journalism.

Like any other accomplished star, Jimmy has some critics. He admits it is an impossible task to please everybody. All I can say is beware. This septuagenarian may deceivingly look very gentle but he is very well fit. He is a boxing aficionado and spars regularly inside a sports arena in Campbelltown. He also regularly participates in the annual city-to-surf run.

Mr. Pimentel is a director and the most senior member of Ateneo Alumni Australia, an association which he helped organize. — ? Dino Crescini

management, that he will end up in a mediocre livelihood scrathing on his computer table for extra penny and a free lodging in mpc. Only those w mental disability can one accept charity from anyone. I hhope he does not beg now and in the future.
