More help for homeowners in mortgage stress

The Hon John Aquilina MP, Member for Riverstone, welcomed the launch of a new guide for people suffering mortgage stress.

The Mortgage Stress Handbook, produced by Legal Aid NSW, is now available by visiting http://www.legalaid.nsw.gov.au/mortgagestresshandbook or by telephoning (02) 9219 5028.

The handbook offers practical advice for anyone in danger of losing their home or experiencing financial difficulty.

“New figures have shown that more than 1,500 homes were repossessed last year.

This valuable new resource informs people in mortgage stress of their options and includes information on where to turn for further assistance.

“It is vital if you are having problems making ends meet”, Mr Aquilina said.

“The handbook covers a range of scenarios, including advice on what to do if you have missed a loan payment, if your financial lender has contacted you, if you have received a default notice, or if The Sheriff is at your door.

“Also, free legal advice can be obtained from the State Government’s helpline, Law Access NSW, by telephoning 1300 888 529”, Mr Aquilina said.
