Aussies in Men’s World Championship 2009

The Australian men’s handball team participated in the XXI Men’s World Championship held recently in Croatia.

 

Australia played a total of nine games in the World Championship.  In the Preliminary Round, Australia played against Argentina, France, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. For the President’s Cup, which is the next stage of the competition, Australia played against Cuba and Kuwait. The placement game was played against Saudi Arabia.  

 

Bevan Calvert, a Filipino Australian youth, played with the Australian team.

Only 22 years old, Bevan has been a member of the national men’s team since 2005. He has been based in Denmark, where he has been playing in the First Division League since 2006.

 

This was the third time that Bevan represented Australia in the world championship.  The first one was in 2005 which was held in Tunisia; the 2007 WC in Germany.  In the recently-concluded WC, Bevan contributed 22 goals to Australia’s total score of 146.  Of the 22 goals, 9 were scored by Bevan at 9 metres from the goal.  For more details about the games and behind the scene information, check out the Australian Handball Federation website:  www.handballaustralia.org.au ?
