Typhoon Pablo kills more than 300 in Southern Philippines

Death toll from typhoon Pablo in the Philippines has continued to climb in the worst-hit areas of Mindanao.

There were 43 people dead when flash floods came down a mountain in Compostela Valley province and engulfed a school and village hall where people were taking shelter from the storm. Missing were nine soldiers and an undetermined number of other people.

Six villagers drowned in floods in the town of Montevista, Compostela Valley, In nearby Davao Oriental province, there 51 people who died, mostly in floods, while two men perished when fierce wind ripped their boat from its mooring and it sank on central Siquijor island.

Typhoon Pablo is one of the strongest typhoons to hit the Philippines this year. It struck Davao Oriental at dawn on December 4, Tuesday then barrelled across southern and central provinces, triggering landslides, flooding and cutting off power in two entire provinces. It headed towards western Palawan province on Wednesday.
