International ATM card scam hits the Philippines

MANILA. – An international modus operandi involving ATM cards has reached the Philippines and already siphoned off “millions of pesos.”

A local newspaper report quotes banking officials as saying the syndicate specializes in duplicating ATM cards and capturing PIN numbers to withdraw cash from victims’ accounts.

One blogger, Spanky Enriquez, posted on his blog saying his ATM card was compromised.

“Apparently, some Banco De Oro (BDO) cards have been compromised by a kind of security breach by hackers — at least, that’s what I was made to understand when the screen of the ATM turned a bright red when I tried to withdraw cash. I had to rush to my branch to get a new card and a new PIN,” Enriquez wrote.

Meanwhile, a BDO officer said the bank will find ways to assist the customer once it is able to determine the problem.

Local banking officials say they have taken measures to protect their customers. (ABS-CBNnews.com)
