Abbott votes to turn back families

The Abbott Government has voted to close the door on migrant families bringing their parents to Australia by abolishing the non-contributory and other family visa categories.

Tony Abbott has betrayed our ethnic communities by removing any chance of them being able to bring their parents to Australia without forking out up to a reported $120,000.

This is a shameful act by a government completely out of touch with ethnic communities and another example of this Government’s unfair Budget targeting low and middle-income earners.

The Labor Opposition moved a disallowance motion to overturn this mean and tricky decision but had it blocked by the Abbott Government.

Not a single Government member of the House of Representatives voted to disallow these cruel regulations.

The axing of these family and carer visas denies Filipino migrants the chance to be reunited with their parents, to care for them and live out their lives as a family.

Now the Abbott Government has closed the door on family visas, abandoning ethnic families and communities across Australia. This is a cruel move by a Government that is completely out of touch with migrant communities.
