Boxing’s most expensive fight may have been over for 3 months, but promoter Bob Arum still has some lingering thoughts on how Manny Pacquiao lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Arum told BadLeftHook.com how the English press studied the May 2 (May 3 in Manila and Sydney) fight and saw Compubox scoring the fight wrong.
‘‘The press in England have run that fight in slow motion and they found the CompuBox figures to be totally fictitious,’’ Arum said of the welterweight unification mega-fight. ‘‘Just no relevance to the actual punches landed. Watching that fight, I thought after the fight that Manny had won 7-5, but I can see where it could be 6-6.’’
Pacquiao lost by unanimous decision and saw his WBO Welterweight title getting unified with Mayweather’s WBA and WBC Welterweight titles.
Mayweather thus remained undefeated (48-0) while Pacquiao’s record fell to 57 wins-6 losses-2 draws.
Arum added he was surprised how the judges gave Mayweather the second round while Pacquiao was the one who put the pressure.
‘‘I can’t see how Manny wasn’t given the second round! Floyd did nothing in the second round! Manny landed a lot of punches. So if you give him the second round and the 12th round, because Floyd did nothing in the 12th round, and you give him the four rounds the judges scored for him, that’s six rounds right there.’’
Still, Arum knows the Fight of the Century was over and his prized client lost and the rival won.
‘‘It is what it is. He lost on the scorecards, Floyd fought a very interesting, very good fight, and everybody goes on with their lives.’’
