Newcastle: a “Mount Druitt by the Sea”

It seems that Newcastle has become the “Mount Druitt by the Sea.” Many people with drug problems or in methadone treatment have apparently relocated there.  Newcastle occupies a large area and it is also the place where able parents from overseas send their children to study. While I am not against assimilation for those who are less fortunate, the situation allows these drug addicts to prey on young international students. They become exposed to those not fully rehabilitated in shopping centres and beaches where students relax on weekends or after their studies.

Thus, when incidents like the robbery and attack on Edward Miranda happen, it gives Australia a bad name overseas to the disadvantage of the University of Newcastle. Parents are not likely to send their children there anymore as danger lurks in that area. Newcastle is no longer a peaceful town when cases like Edward’s happen. Even worse, such attacks have become a day-to-day occurrence, based on records of admission gathered from hospitals in Newcastle.

It is high time that the authorities be more vigilant in protecting the lives and limbs of both local and international students, the latter now being the target of drug addicts, especially in Newcastle. It is no secret that upfront payments delivered by these international students support the educational system in Australia.

Unlike their local counterparts, these students are not entitled to avail of HECS (Higher Education Contribution Scheme) or PELS (Post-Graduate Education Loan Scheme) and are therefore compelled to pay their matriculation fees upfront.
