FAME to honor fashion designers

Sydney fashionistas, gear up! Two Philippine-born Fashion Designers will be given an award by the Filipino Australian Movement for Empowerment, Inc. (FAME) on its 2nd year anniversary gala dinner. It will be held on Saturday 24th July 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the Main Event Function Centre in Blacktown. A runway fashion segment will be the highlight of this event called “An evening for Fashion” that will present the individual collections of Jojo Marquez and Leonardo Salinas.

Leonardo Salinas, born and raised in the Philippines, migrated to Sydney in the early 90’s in pursuit of his dream to be a Fashion Designer. Leo launched his eponymous label LEONARDO SALINAS during the 2008 Rosemount Australian Fashion Week as part of the group show. His prêt-a-porter collection is available in his boutique for his circle of fans together with his Haute Couture for brides and Red Carpet Gowns for private clientele and celebrities.

Joselito Fabian Marquez, also from the Philippines, is one of eleven siblings. He started his fashion design career at a young age of nineteen. His first job was in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, designing and making dresses for the princesses’ of the United Arab Emirates before establishing himself in Sydney. His company Arushie is now regarded as an icon in the bridal industry. His creations blend the classic with the modern; an edgy approach in every creation and offers a range of accessible couture gowns suggestive of royalty, a ready-to-wear line that challenges the boundaries of bridal design. Jojo believes that every bride is a princess.

Both fashion designers were thrilled to know about the recognition they are to receive. The story of Leo and Jojo’s vision and aspirations reaching for that “shining star” is empowering and inspiring to many of us migrants in our own journey towards that elusive dream.

FAME Inc. is a movement and an advocacy group geared towards the political, economic, and social empowerment of Filipino Australians to enable them to become active stakeholders in the mainstream Australian society. Gala dinner tickets are now available through FAME’s directorate. ###
