Is plagiarism now legal in the Philippines?

AN OPEN LETTER

The Filipino Press Group Sydney cannot protest vigorously enough against reports recently that the Supreme Court of the Philippines has handed down a decision that would effectively legalize plagiarism, an act so basically shameless to civilized society that even school children would recognize it as cheating.

We share the anger of our colleagues in the Philippines’ press at this act of injustice, committed by the highest-ranking guardians of the sacred laws of the land that is the Supreme Court of the Philippines.

There must be remedies available that would allow protection to authors and journalists in the Philippines against plagiarism.

We call on law makers to find them, and to restore some dignity to Filipinos around the world who share the embarrassment brought about by this unacceptable decision of the Supreme Court of the Philippines.

  1. Plagiarism SHOULD be legal. It should be handled with reputation, not arbitrarily interfering with other peoples’ property. Intellectual property laws are tyrannical and monopolistic.

Plagiarism SHOULD be legal. It should be handled with reputation, not arbitrarily interfering with other peoples’ property. Intellectual property laws are tyrannical and monopolistic. But I do not have any malicious intent to pass off that idea as my own.

  3. There is no single thing here on earth that we owned. Our intellect could be plagiarize from other writers mind because we are reading much. We are all plagiarist. It is a combination of all known facts combine in our minds. Copying is not bad as long as in is made with good intentional. Why need a law? Self control and discipline is all that we need. Articles in the net involving how to avoid plagiarism is present. We are improving because we are plagiarizing. Why now? that the temptation of committing a plagiarism is just a click away??? Wasting your time putting into a law?? There is so many who would violate it after all.
