Ateneo grabs trophy from La Salle by Dino Crescini

Castle Hill, NSW. August 20, 2011.

It’s a trophy that has been very elusive from the Ateneo Alumni Bowlers of Australia. Today, Alumni players of Ateneo grabbed the much-coveted title from the Green Archers who have kept it for the past 10 years. It was in 2001 when the Annual Ten-Pin Bowling Tournament between Ateneo and La Salle alumni started.

The 2011 championship title was won by a very slim margin that was finally decided in a one-on-one singles game between Ateneo’s John Acosta and Ceto Sandoval of La Salle.

Both Acosta and Sandoval scored near-perfect games of 9 strikes each during the previous team competition. Acosta’s score of 278 had a slight edge over Sandoval, giving Ateneo a very slim margin of only 2 points. Thus, John Acosta had to be beaten twice by Ceto Sandoval in the final round for La Salle to retain the championship trophy.

It was a very close fight indeed between the two titans of both schools. Each strike scored by Sandoval was matched by another strike rolled by Acosta. The situation was so tense that everybody was held breathless.

Sandoval won the first bout and this writer approached him for a congratulatory handshake. But Vangie Leones intervened, saying that the competition was not yet over. Ceto had to win another game for La Salle to clinch the trophy.

Earlier during the tournament, this writer was greeted by a competing player. I said: “I feel good and that is an indication that Ateneo will win today.” It turned out to be a prophetic response. Ateneo won!
