Eagles nip Archers by Obet Dionisio

The Ateneo Alumni Ten-Pin Bowlers snatched the 2011 Trophy from DLSU Alumni during a sizzling tournament held on Saturday, August 20 at the AMF Bowling Centre in Castle Hill, NSW.

The tournament was hotly contested by twelve bowlers each from the two schools, vying for honors in the Doubles Event, Singles Event, and School Event Competitions. The School Event was won by La Salle but the Doubles Event was won by Ateneo’s Team of John Acosta and Levi Descallar, beating La Salle’s father and son team of Bob Leones and Alan Leones, with a total three game scratch score of 1339 to 1187.

In the Singles Competition, the top two scorers from each school were qualified to play in the Challenge Matches. Through Step-Ladder matches. La Salle’s Ceto Sandoval went from fourth place, beating third placer Levi Descallar and second placer Bob Leones, to win the right to challenge first placer John Acosta of Ateneo.

The first game was won by Ceto Sandoval with total pinfalls of 203 against John Acosta’s 201. But Acosta prevailed in the final game with a score of 190 versus Sandoval’s 161. Thus, Acosta won the Singles Event for Ateneo, giving the Blue Eagles the Over-all Championship Trophy.

In Season 74 of UAAP basketball, Ateneo has so far taken the lead with a 13-win, 0-loss record. Ateneo expectedly dominated the other teams of the UAAP in the first round, thanks mainly to the talented lineup that coach Norman Black has had the luxury of using.

And though the second round may be a different story, there is the possibility of seeing a “Battle of the Birds” if the Adamson Soaring Falcons continue their winning streak. If Ateneo wins again the 2011 championship, this will be the 4th straight season of the Blue Eagles.
