Computer games to be regulated in line with film classification

From January 1 computer games will have the same rating classification as films. Legislation passed the Parliament which will allow an R18+ category for computer games to become a reality.

These reforms are 10 years in the making and will bring the classification of computer games into line with existing categories used to classify films.

This is about providing more information for gamers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play. It will stop minors being able to purchase unsuitable material.

It means that adults can choose what games they want to play within the bounds of the law.

The States and Territories will now pass their own laws to ensure that these games are properly regulated and subject to this, the national scheme will start on 1 January next year.
