Former Australian priest dies in Philippine typhoon

A former Australian Catholic priest was confirmed to have been among the casualties of typhoon Yolanda (international code name Haiyan) that hit the Philippines last month.

Fr. Kevin Lee of Padre Pio Parish in Glenmore Park was immediately removed by Parramatta Diocese Bishop Anthony Fisher after declaring to the parish congregation that he has been secretly married to a Filipina. He has since been living in the Philippines with his wife Josefina.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman confirmed the death of the 50-year-old Australian man in the Philippines. The consular affairs office said that they were providing assistance to the man’s family.

Mr. Lee said that he fell in love with Josefina while they were singing George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” in a Manila karaoke bar in 2011.
