Obituary: Coach Virgilio ‘Baby’ Dalupan

Announcement from Ateneo de Manila: “It is with deep sadness that we inform of the passing of Coach Virgilio ‘Baby’ Dalupan. A legendary coach, sportsman and beloved alumnus of Ateneo de Manila University. Coach Baby returned to our Creator on Wednesday, 17 August 2016. He was 92 years old.”

Coach Baby received the Ateneo Sports Hall of Fame (ASHOF) Award in 1979. Part of his citation reads:

“A crack athlete who was popular as a cager at the Ateneo from 1947-49, a track and field star and captain of the Ateneo football team … a member of the champion PRISCO team of the MICAA and National Open, Baby Dalupan was elected to the Hall of Fame for being the greatest modern coach in Philippine basketball. At the Ateneo, he steered the Varsity team to two successive NCAA crowns in 1975 and 1976. A coach of the year awardee in 1958, 1975 and 1976, Baby Dalupan’s career as a basketball coach is probably the most impressive among today’s Filipino mentors.”
